About the Designer

Educated at the Slade School in England and trained in textiles in villages in Peru and Turkey, Christopher Farr has made his mark as one of today’s preeminent rug designers. As a young abstract painter in 1975, he won a Boise Traveling Fellowship to Peru. It was this trip that soon sealed the direction of his artistic life, because there Farr encountered pre-Columbian textiles for the first time and was seized by the magnetism and utility of the 3,000 year old work.

He began to search for ways to marry his love of abstraction to the ancient craft of textile art and spent months designing and making rugs in a village in Western Turkey. With time, his work fused the venerable techniques of hand dying and hand looming with a modernist concern for colour and form. The result is abstract wool canvases for the floor.

Established in 1988 Christopher Farr has been at the spearhead of contemporary rug design for thirty years. Together with his business partner Matthew Bourne they were the catalyst that revolutionised the contemporary rug market. With backgrounds that are firmly rooted in antique carpets and textiles Farr and Bourne share a passionate knowledge of contemporary art and design that informs the work that is produced to this day.

Over the past 30 years Christopher Farr has collaborated with leading artists and designers from across the globe including Gary Hume, Sarah Morris, Georgina Von Etzdorf Andrée Putman, John Pawson and Claudio Silvestrin. They also have an ongoing collaboration with the Josef and Anni Albers foundation and continue to seek out further exciting projects that challenge their medium whilst also respecting the history and traditions of the craft.

In 2000 Farr & Bourne invited Michal Silver to join them in founding Christopher Farr Cloth producing fabrics and wallcoverings that channel the same commitment to creativity and craft.
