Tell us about your brand?
Plumen was founded in 2010 by Nicolas Roope and Michael-George Hemus, they created the name Plumen, a combination of “plume,” the decorative feathers of a bird and “lumen”, the measurement of light, which reflect the values of the company.
What makes you stand out from the crowd?
Our Original Plumen 001 bulb was the world’s first designer low energy light bulb. We couldn’t understand why the humble light bulb – the very symbol of new ideas – hadn’t really evolved in almost 150 years.
We want to know about your latest collection and what the inspiration is behind it?
In our latest designer collaboration with Batch.works, we’ve pushed the boundaries of sustainable design to bring you a range of 3D-printed shades made using plastic recycled from water bottles, fridges and other sources of plastic pollution.
Our new Batch.works shades are all made with a filament supplied by Amsterdam’s social enterprise Reflow, which recycles and repurposes plastics that would otherwise be sent to landfill or incinerated. They’re also printed to order at Batch.works’ east London headquarters, significantly lowering the amount of waste produced. Closing the life cycle of the design, when you’re finished with them, they can be recycled with the rest of our domestic plastics, ready to be reinvented once more.
What are your brands sustainable values?
We’re very serious about lighting design. On the outside our designs are pretty, playful and provocative. On the inside, our rigorous engineering team has given our bulbs long lifespans – at least 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb while using at most, 20% of the energy. We’re proud to say you can have it all. We call it #GoodDesignForGood and we hope to inspire you to explore new efficient technologies that don’t compromise on style or beauty.
What does the future look like for your brand?
In the future we’d like to explore how our products can interact with Smart Home technology to further our sustainability credentials.
